With rising ocean temperatures pushing the Great Barrier Reef through increasingly severe bleaching events, Australian scientists have been testing an unusual idea that was inspired by nature itself: making clouds brighter. In March 2020, researchers from Southern Cross University, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and partner organisations executed the world's first outdoor marine cloud brightening experiment where they used a specially designed seawater sprayer to release hundreds of trillions of microscopic seawater droplets every second above the Reef.
