US Central Command said the strikes were aimed at "Iranian military capabilities" used to threaten vessels freely transiting through the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States on early Thursday (local time Wednesday) disabled an oil tanker attempting to reach an Iranian port, marking the first commercial vessel targeted since Washington reimposed its naval blockade against Iran as part of its escalating campaign over the Strait of Hormuz.

The strikes -- which started at 1900 GMT -- "are targeting Iranian military capabilities used to threaten vessels freely transiting through the Strait of Hormuz," US Central Command said in a post on X.

The United States carried out another round of airstrikes against Iran on Wednesday (local time), targeting coastal defence systems and missile infrastructure linked to attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, as Washington intensified military operations for the fifth straight day.

The conflict, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran, prompted Tehran to effectively shut the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global shipping and driving up oil, fertiliser and commodity prices.
