Researchers studying sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants across the United States estimated that the metals contained in the waste could be worth up to $13 million annually for a community of one million people. According to Environmental Science and Technology, $2.6 million of the estimated value came from gold and silver, according to a study that examined the concentration, origin and potential economic value of metals accumulating in municipal sewage sludge.

Thousands of old oil and gas wells, located underneath forests, farmlands and even housing estates throughout the US, no longer provide fuel but continue to pose environmental risks. The issue of abandoned oil and gas wells, some of which are decades old, has become a growing concern for the US government, which has struggled to secure enough funding to seal them.

Wind turbines generate electricity without direct emissions, but their enormous blades create a difficult waste problem. According to a study published in Resources, Conservation and Recycling, by 2050, the United States is expected to generate about 2.2 million tons of retired wind-turbine blade material, much of it made from tough fibreglass composites that are difficult and expensive to recycle.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said power plants built exclusively to supply electricity to data centers, and not connected to the public grid, may be exempt from key federal pollution rules. The move is aimed at accelerating AI infrastructure development, easing pressure on regional power grids, and supporting the rapid expansion of data centers across the United States.
