An Indian student accused of murdering his 19-year-old girlfriend in Tucson, Arizona, was arrested in Germany before he could depart for India, US police said.

Varun Batchigari tried to flee US and stole her phone, credit cards and sent a series of messages to her mother. The Police investigation revealed that the accused escaped to Tucson International Airport from where he took a flight to Houston that connected to another flight out to Berlin.

Investigators allege that the accused stole the victim's cellphone and credit cards after the killing, and sent a series of text messages to her mother.

From Tucson, Batchigari allegedly flew to Houston before boarding a flight to Germany. He had planned to travel onwards to India, but was arrested after arriving in Germany.
