Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent about two and a half hours exploring the Moon on July 20, 1969, and left behind something more than footprints and a flag. They deployed a square panel that measured about 46 centimeters (18 inches) across before returning to the lunar module.

Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard paused near the end of the mission's second moonwalk on February 6, 1971 and attached a Wilson six-iron club head to the handle of a lunar sample collection tool. It was hidden inside his spacesuit until that moment, and the improvised club had been approved by NASA but kept secret from television viewers.

In 1934, Western scientists first heard reports from Papua New Guinea of wild mushrooms causing visions of tiny people, a phenomenon called "mushroom madness." Nearly a century later, DNA sequencing has confirmed that a single, identical mushroom species causes these same hallucinations in communities thousands of miles apart in China and the Philippines.

The dodo has been extinct for more than three centuries, yet basic questions about how it lived, saw and behaved have remained largely unanswered. Very few complete skulls of the bird survive today, which has long limited what scientists can say with confidence about its senses and daily habits.

Black pine jewel beetles, scientifically named Melanophila acuminata, belong to a unique group of insects that exhibit pyrophilous behaviour, which means they are naturally attracted to forest fires. These beetles are primarily found across boreal and temperate forests of the north, where they play a vital role in the ecosystem's renewal process.

Animal bones resting on the floors of South Australia's underwater caves are revealing far more than the identity of the creatures they once belonged to. According to a new study published in PLOS One, the cave environment itself leaves distinct "fingerprints" on bones, helping scientists reconstruct how they were deposited, the environmental conditions they experienced after deposition, and the processes that affected their preservation over time.
