Deep beneath the Pilbara region of Western Australia lies some of the oldest and best preserved crust anywhere on the planet, and it has just revealed something unexpected about Earth's earliest history. Volcanic rocks dating back 3.1 billion years show chemical signs that surface water had already travelled deep into the planet's interior at that time, helping generate magma long before modern plate tectonics existed in its familiar form.

Over the next several hundred million years, Earth could face numerous unexpected consequences, all due to the distance slowly yet steadily developing between the planet and its only moon. In what is coming to be defined as one of the most precisely known physical quantities in all of contemporary planetary science, the Moon is moving away from Earth at the speed of 3.83 centimetres annually, with a formal uncertainty of approximately 0.09 millimetres.

The ocean currently absorbs about one-quarter of the carbon dioxide emitted by human activities each year, making it one of Earth's most important natural buffers against climate change. Now, scientists and engineers believe they can enhance this natural process.
