Across the global construction and architecture sectors, researchers have spent decades searching for scalable, low-carbon alternatives to concrete and traditional clay masonry. According to structural energy data from the International Energy Agency, standard building materials are responsible for a massive share of global carbon emissions, driven by the high-heat kilns required to process cement and fire structural bricks.

As Arctic permafrost thaws and coastlines erode, enormous quantities of ancient carbon that has sat frozen in the ground for thousands of years are being carried into the sea. Researchers from UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Washington released a bright pink, non-toxic dye into Los Penasquitos Lagoon, a small tidal estuary within Torrey Pines State Beach and Natural Reserve, to study something surprisingly understudied in ocean science: how small-scale freshwater plumes behave once they reach the breaking surf zone along the coast.

In a remote patch of Colorado's Gunnison National Forest, four miles from the nearest ploughed road, a man known simply as Billy Barr has spent 52 consecutive winters recording daily snowfall, temperature and weather observations from his off-grid cabin at roughly 9,600 feet. Barr first began jotting down snow measurements in 1974, shortly after graduating from Rutgers University with a degree in environmental science, initially just to keep himself occupied through the long, isolated winters near Gothic, a former silver mining town now home to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory.
