According to a study published in Science Advances, Mars probably had hot, water-rich environments almost as soon as its crust began forming. Researchers examined a tiny 'zircon' crystal preserved inside the Martian meteorite Northwest Africa 7034, better known as 'Black Beauty,' and found chemical and structural clues suggesting that hot, water-rich fluids were present around 4.45 billion years ago.

The first X-rays taken in space have shown that astronauts may soon have access to a medical tool that could become important on missions to the Moon and beyond. During the Fram2 mission in 2025, crew members used a digital X-ray system while orbiting Earth, producing images that researchers found diagnostically adequate.

An asteroid roughly the size of a football field could cause catastrophic damage if it struck a populated area, making planetary defence a problem scientists cannot afford to treat as science fiction. Now, researchers have simulated one of the most dramatic possible responses: using a nuclear warhead to disrupt a threatening asteroid.
