In 2003, scientists began closely examining how an old hunting technique called fladry could be transformed into a modern, non-lethal tool for reducing conflicts between wolves and livestock. Originally used in parts of Eastern Europe and Russia to guide wolves toward traps, lines of hanging flags were later tested as a way to keep wolves away from vulnerable livestock areas.

A coral reef off the coast of Benin, long presumed dead, has just been found alive and full of activity, more than sixty years after scientists first wrote it off. Old surveys from the 1960s, carried out mainly to locate good fishing spots, had picked up signs of a possible deep-water reef sitting more than fifty metres below the surface.

A new study published in the journal Geosystems and Geoenvironment has identified the 2.56-billion-year-old Pichhore orbicular granite in Madhya Pradesh as one of the world's oldest known orbicular granites. The ancient rock has drawn geologists' attention because of its unusual spherical structures, known as orbicules, which are rarely found anywhere in the world.

For generations, people have viewed the high-pitched squeaks and chirps in prairie dog colonies as simple alarm signals. When a predator or unfamiliar visitor approached, a series of sharp barks would quickly spread through the colony, prompting nearby animals to become alert or retreat underground.
