For centuries, humans have searched for ways to extend life, first through medicine that prevented early deaths and later through research aimed at slowing the biological processes associated with aging. But even if scientists eventually found a way to stop many age-related problems, the body might still face limits built into its own cells.

Sperm whales may be among the largest predators in the ocean, but even these enormous hunters face a surprisingly simple problem when they rest: staying underwater. According to a study published in Current Biology, researchers have now found that the whales appear to release bubbles as they sleep, reducing their buoyancy just enough to remain suspended beneath the surface instead of drifting upwards.
