NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court, in a judgment dated July 29, held that lift manufacturers, maintenance companies and building owners can all be held responsible if a person dies or is injured in a lift accident. The court said companies responsible for maintaining lifts have a high duty of care towards passengers and cannot ignore known defects.

The Supreme Court asked the Calcutta High Court to hear Abhishek Banerjee's plea soon. He seeks permission to travel abroad for necessary eye treatment. The high court had previously extended his interim protection from coercive action. Banerjee is challenging an earlier order which restricted his foreign travel. The court wants the plea to be considered within the next week.
