NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay its order directing the removal of stray dogs from public institutions such as hospitals, schools and colleges, rejecting pleas filed by animal lovers and welfare groups.

The bench said the right to live with dignity encompasses the right to live freely without threat of harm from dog bites and the court cannot remain oblivious to harsh ground realities where children, international travellers and elderly have fallen victim to dog bite incidents

Hearing the stray dogs case, the court said authorities should consider euthanasia for severely ill and dangerous dogs while stressing that the issue concerns public health, safety and ecological balance.
