The NCPI shot to national limelight yesterday after a rebel MP declared they would merge with the little-known political outfit from Bengal.

NCPI state youth general secretary Titas Bhattacharya said that party leaders were caught by surprise by the announcement and are still trying to understand the situation.

Trinamool MP Kunal Ghosh was also quizzed by the CID in the same case. He reached the CID office at around 3.30 pm and left at around 7.15 pm. Ghosh said, "I replied to their questions and cooperated in the probe. I was made to sit face to face with Abhishek Banerjee." After leaving the CID office, Ghosh went to former CM Mamata Banerjee's residence.

The NCPI was registered in Bengal in January 2023. Records show it got donations totalling Rs 1.13 lakh. Shewly Kundu is mentioned as treasurer of the party whose registered address is in Bengal's Howrah

Minutes before the meeting, the Mamata Banerjee camp had reached out to the Speaker and urged him not to accord "any recognition... to any purported separate group or faction of the AITC".

Baidyanath Ghosh Dastidar, son of TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, has sent a legal notice to Mamata Banerjee and other TMC leaders over alleged defamatory claims that he sought an MLA ticket.
