The San Francisco-bound flight had already crossed into Chinese airspace before the crew decided to turn back to the national capital, keeping passengers airborne for over eight hours.

IndiGo has also reduced its international capacity by 17 percent amid rising aviation fuel prices.

The AMCA project is considered one of India's most important defence aviation programmes. It aims to develop a home-grown fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force, strengthening the country's self-reliance in advanced military technology.

IndiGo has already reduced international capacity by nearly 17% as part of temporary schedule adjustments aimed at managing rising operational costs.
