NEW DELHI: The Patna high court has quashed criminal proceedings against a man accused of pressuring his wife to sign divorce and child custody papers, holding that such conduct does not amount to cruelty under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The court held that asking a spouse to agree to the terms of separation or custody does not fall within the definition of cruelty.

Isha Foundation told the Court that the earlier order did not specifically include the 39 short videos and five English videos listed in the plaint, despite the same content.

The Bombay High Court on Friday also reacted strongly to the FDA's ongoing action against private hotels as the FDA claimed the ministry canteen was 98 percent clean.

The observation came while hearing a petition filed by Walkar's brother, who had sought a direction to the trial court to conclude the case within a fixed timeline.

The Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to DMK leader V Senthil Balaji. This relief was provided until further orders in a new corruption case. The court imposed conditions including cooperation with the investigation and passport deposit. Balaji faces allegations of irregularities in the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation. The Madras High Court had previously dismissed his anticipatory bail plea.

The court said that while it appreciated the FDA's efforts, the authority should be "equal to all" and not target only private establishments over alleged violations of food safety and hygiene norms.

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the operation of FIR No. 05 of 2026 registered against DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji and issued notice to the Tamil Nadu government on his plea challenging the Madras High Court's refusal to grant him anticipatory bail in the alleged TASMAC scam case.
