Union Budget Education Live Updates: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today (February 1) presented the Union Budget 2026-27 in which she announced at least one new girls hostel in each district, and a new institute for design in Northeast. The Central Government has also proposed supporting the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, Mumbai, for setting up content labs in 15,000 secondary schools. In one of the biggest announcements for this sector, Sitharaman announced that the Central Government will be setting up five university townships in the vicinity of major industrial logistics centres.In last year's education budget, the BJP government had promised that in the next 5 years, 75,000 medical seats will be added, and the government will give a boost to the infrastructure of IITs set up after 2014. In 2025, Central government allocated Rs 1,28,650.05 crore, marking a 6.65 per cent increase from 2024.As per the economic survey 2025-26 tabled in Parliament on Thursday (January 29) by Sitharaman, India has achieved near-universal enrolment at the school level, however, the gains in enrolment have not translated uniformly into learning outcomes particularly beyond the elementary stage, where net enrolment rate (NER) remains low at 52.2 per cent.Scroll down to check latest Union Budget Education updates, industry expectations, Education News, Times Now
